SciFi and Fantasy Art Näcken by Per Johansson

In Sweden we have a mythological figure called "Näcken". He sits nude in waterstreams like creeks and rivers, playing his fiddle, to lure women and children near the water so they will drown.

Every year in July, there is a contest held in the village of Hackås. Male fiddle-players compete for the title "Näcken of the year". They are not allowed to wear anything but materials found in the nature. Most of them only wear a laurel of leafs and/or flowers around their heads. A huge crowd votes for the winner. The public service TV uses to show the winner and some of the other contestants on the evening news. Uncensored of course, this is Sweden...

A contest like that would never be allowed here in the united states as their are too many prudes and religious fanatics. A few years ago some of them tried to get Halloween banned. Idiots!! Per Johansson replies: "Well, that’s funny because USA is supposed to promote freedom... Happy to say, the puritans don’t have so much saying here in Sweden, so there isn’t much fuzz over this tradition. Thanks, Wayne!"
